Plain feedback, even when it stings

A specific critique is more useful than warm general praise. The hard part is knowing when plain becomes careless.
Specific over warm
“Looks good” ends the conversation. “The second paragraph hides the point” gives someone a place to work. If you want feedback in plain language, you are asking for the second kind.
Warmth is not the enemy. Warmth with no location is. People can hear a hard note when they can see where to put their hands.
Softening a sentence
You will soften a line if the sharper version might embarrass someone. That is care. It is also how a real problem becomes a vague one. The Collaboration quiz asks about this on purpose.
Try one sentence at full strength, said to the work and not to the person. “This section is unclear” lands differently from “You are unclear.”
The room and the work
Some people notice tension in a group before they notice the work slipping. If that is you, plain feedback has a cost you can feel in your body. You are not imagining it.
The work still slips. A room that stays polite while the draft gets worse is not a kind room. It is a delayed argument.
