How you join a group
11 Jun 2026
You set the pace, you keep the work steady, or you smooth the tension so people can stay.
Set the pace
You move first. The group borrows your speed. This is a gift at the start of something and a shove when people are still understanding the problem.
Ask, once, whether the room is ready. Then go. Asking all afternoon is not a pace. It is a stall with manners.
Keep it steady
You are the person who remembers the loose end. Drama does not impress you. A group that only sprints will drop the work you were holding.
Say the loose end out loud. Steady people often carry it privately and then resent the room for not noticing.
Smooth the tension
You feel the temperature change before the agenda slips. You will trade a sharper point for a room that can continue. Sometimes that saves the group. Sometimes it buries the issue the group needed.
Leave one disagreement in the open. You can smooth the next one.
